AUBURN UNIVERSITY SYMPHONIC WINDS TO PERFORM AT OPELIKA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

The Auburn University Symphonic Winds will perform in concert on Friday evening, April 17th, at 8:00 pm in the Opelika Performing Arts Center.  A select group of fifty-one musicians, the Symphonic Winds is the premier performing ensemble in the Auburn University Band program.  The concert is in conjunction with the Alabama All-State Band Festival being held on the Auburn University campus.  Conductor of the Symphonic Winds is Dr. Rick Good, Director of Bands and Acting Co-Chair of the Music Department.

The concert will feature a variety of traditional and contemporary music.  The program will begin with “Whirr, Whirr, Whirr!!!” written by Ralph Hultgren. The second selection on the program is the classic, “Carmen Symphony” composed by Georges Bizet and arranged by Jose Serebrier. The opera of Carmen is set in Seville, Spain, c. 1830, and concerns the eponymous Carmen, a beautiful Gypsy with a fiery temper. Free with her love, she woos the corporal Don JosÈ, an inexperienced soldier. Their relationship leads to his rejection of his former love, mutiny against his superior, and joining a gang of smugglers. His jealousy when she turns from him to the bullfighter Escamillo leads him to murder Carmen.

Other selections on the program will include “Vilabella” concert march by Kenneth Williams conducted by Associate Director of Bands, Dr. Corey Spurlin. The concert will conclude with Michael Daugherty’s “Rosa Parks Boulevard” featuring three trombone soloists Dr. Matt Wood, Riley Jones, and Drew Mabry. Daugherty’s musical depiction was inspired by attending a church service with Parks in 1999.  The trombone voice symbolizing her preacher is contrasted with the turbulent bus ride marking a monumental point is history.

The concert will have wide appeal for people of all ages.  There is no admission charge, and the public is invited to attend.
