Auburn University Symphonic Winds and Percussion Ensemble Tour
Auburn University’s premiere wind and percussion ensemble, the Symphonic Winds, along with the Percussion Ensemble, will be performing four concerts on their spring tour, April 3-6, 2011. The program features a unique variety of musical styles including contemporary as well as traditional works. The concerts will be held at Hilton Head Island High School in South Carolina and Veterans High School and Houston County High School in Warner Robbins, Georgia.
The ensembles, directed by Dr. Rick Good and Dr. Doug Rosener, will present two public concerts while on tour. The first will be at Hilton Head Island High School on Monday, April 4, at 7:00 p.m. The second public performance will be at Veterans High School in Warner Robbins, Georgia, on Tuesday, April 5, at 7:00 p.m. In addition to these public concerts, the Auburn University Symphonic Winds and Percussion Ensemble will be presenting master classes and clinics as well as performances for the high school instrumentalists during the school day. The ensembles will also perform a concert at Houston County High School on Wednesday, April 6, at 8:00 a.m.
The AU Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Doug Rosener, will present works that feature a wide variety of different percussion instruments. Some highlights from the program include “Sculpture 3” by Rudiger Pawassar, a contemporary marimba trio, “Exploration of Time” by Ekhard Kopetzki, a non-pitched “drummy” percussion chamber piece, and Eric Ewazen’s “Palace of Nine Perfections,” a large scale percussion work that was inspired by a set of artistic ink and color scrolls by the Chinese artist Yuan Jiang.
The AU Symphonic Winds, under the direction of Dr. Rick Good, will consist of works by various composers such as Holst, Grainger, Sousa, Coleman, and Menard. The Auburn University Symphonic Winds will also be performing two new compositions that AU Director of Bands, Dr. Richard Good, was an integral part in commissioning. One of these compositions featured on the program is “Loki’s Revenge” by Nathan Tanouye. The composer’s concept for the piece was derived from a god in Norse mythology named Loki, and was commissioned by the South Eastern Conference Band Director’s Association. The AU Symphonic Winds performance of this composition will be the premiere performance in South Carolina and in Georgia.
Following the tour, the AU Symphonic Winds will present their final concert of the academic year at the Opelika Performing Arts Center in Opelika, Alabama on Tuesday, April 12, at 7:30 pm. Conductor is Dr. Rick Good, Director of Bands and Professor of Music at Auburn University.
