Posted on by

The Twenty-first Annual Auburn Honor Band Festival will be held on the Auburn University campus this weekend, February 9-11, 2012.   From nearly 850 nominations received from high school band directors, approximately 225 top high school musicians will participate in a weekend of concerts, rehearsals, and social activities.   The Festival is hosted by the Auburn University Bands in conjunction with the Department of Music and College of Liberal Arts. The festival involves students from over 125 high schools and represents twelve different states.

Participants were selected for the festival through a competitive online application and their band director’s recommendation. Upon arrival in Auburn, the talented musicians will audition again for chair placement in the three bands, designated as “Wind Ensemble,” “Tiger,” and “Eagle.”

Guest composer/clinician for the weekend will be David Gillingham. Professor Gillingham will guest conduct one of his original compositions with each ensemble. Dr. Gillingham has an international reputation for the works he has written for band and percussion. Guest conductors for the weekend will be Frank Wickes, Carruth Alumni Professor of Emeritus, served as Director of Bands at Louisiana State University from 1980-2010, will conduct the Symphonic Wind Ensemble; Jeff Bianchi, retired Director of Bands at James Madison High School, and current conductor of the American Youth Symphonic Orchestra, will conduct the Tiger Band; and John Casagrande, current retired Director of Bands at W.T. Woodson and current Adjunct Professor at George Mason University, conduct the Eagle Band.

The three bands will present the finale concert on Saturday, February 11, at 11:00 a.m. at the Auburn Performing Arts Center located at Auburn High School. The concert is free and the public is invited.

A highlight of the festival will be a special “Host Night” concert for the participants by the Auburn University Symphonic Winds and Jazz Ensemble on Friday evening, February 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Auburn High School Performing Arts Center. Dr. Rick Good, Director of Bands at Auburn University will direct the Symphonic Winds and Dr. Michael Pendowski, Jazz Ensemble Director and Applied Saxophone Instructor, will direct the AU Jazz Ensemble.
