20th Annual Auburn University Symphonic High School Honor Band Festival to be held on campus this weekend

The Twentieth Annual Auburn Honor Band Festival will be held on the Auburn University campus this weekend, February 10-12, 2011. From nearly 900 nominations received from high school band directors, approximately 220 top high school musicians will participate in a weekend of concerts, rehearsals, and social activities. The Festival is hosted by the Auburn University Bands in conjunction with the Department of Music and College of Liberal Arts. The festival involves students from over 125 high schools and represents eleven different states.
Participants were selected for the festival through a combination of, competitive online and their band director’s recommendation. Upon arrival in Auburn, the talented musicians will audition again for chair placement in the three bands, designated as “Wind Ensemble,” “Tiger,” and “Eagle.”
Guest composer/clinician for the weekend will be Eric Morales. Mr. Morales will guest conduct one of his original compositions with each ensemble. Rick Good, Director of Bands at Auburn, will conduct the Wind Ensemble, Rob Hunter, from Mesa Community College in Mesa, Arizona, will conduct the Tiger Band and Mr. Ishbah Cox, Auburn graduate, and current Assistant Director of Bands at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, will conduct the Eagle Band.
The three bands will present the finale concert on Saturday, February 12, at 11:00 a.m. at the Student Activities Center. These concerts are free and are open to the public.
A highlight of the festival will be a special “Host Night” concert for the participants by the Auburn University Symphonic Winds and Jazz Ensemble on Friday evening, February 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Auburn High School Performing Arts Center. Special guest soloist will be Graham Breedlove, trumpet soloist and member of the United States Army Blues Jazz Ambassadors, from Washington, D.C.
The concert is free and the public is invited to attend.
