Susan Steele has served for the past two years as the Assistant Band Director and Choir Director at Beulah High School in Lee County, Alabama under head director Rob Smith. While at BHS she directed the 5th and 6th grade beginning bands, the high school Concert Choir, the B-Cat Singers, and the Beulah Winterguard. Ms. Steele also assisted in directing the Beulah Marching and Symphonic Bands which have both consistently received superior and ratings at festivals and competitions.
Ms. Steele graduated cum laude from Auburn in 2009 with a Bachelor’s degree in Instrumental and Vocal Music Education. During her time at Auburn she participated in the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Orchestra, Chamber Choir, Low Brass Ensemble, and was Baritone Section Leader in the Auburn University Marching Band. Ms. Steele studied Applied Euphonium with Dr. Rick Good and Dr. Matthew Wood and Applied Voice with Jeff Gilbreath. Her professional associations include Kappa Delta Pi, Alabama Music Educators Association, the National Band Association where she served as treasurer, and Kappa Kappa Psi where she served as Vice President of Service. Ms. Steele was also honored to be selected for the 2007 National Intercollegiate Band conducted by Mr. Frank B. Wickes (Director of Bands for Lousiana State University) with guest composer Eric Ewazen, and again for the 2009 National Intercollegiate Band which was conducted by Colonel John R. Bourgeois (Director Emeritus for “The President’s Own” Marine Band) with guest composer Mark Camphouse.
Ms. Steele completed her student teaching at Beauregard Elementary School, Auburn Jr. High School, and Auburn High School with Erin Redden, Larry Cornelius, Teresa Rhyne, and Dr. Rusty Logan. Ensembles she directed include the Beauregard 4th Grade Choir, the Auburn Jr. High Symphonic and Honors Bands, the Auburn Jr. High Chanson Choir, and the Auburn High School Honors Band.
Ms. Steele is currently pursuing the Master of Music Education degree at Auburn University.
