The 12th Annual Auburn University Middle School Symphonic Honor Band Festival will be held at Auburn University February 3 - 5, 2022.

MSHBPoster.jpgStudents from across the Southeast will be selected to participate in the festival based on submitted applications and director recommendations. We will seat one band, and chair placement will be determined by an on-site audition.

During the course of the festival, students will hear performances by the AU Concert and Jazz Bands, and work with a renowned conductor and composer.  The festival will culminate with a finale concert on Saturday, February 5.


Placement Auditions

Auditions for seating in the band will begin after check-in and a list of audition rooms and judges will be posted at the check-in site. You will be assigned an audition time when you check in. The chair placement auditions for wind instrumentalists will consist of the CONCERT C, F, Bb, and Eb scales, and the one octave concert Bb chromatic scale. Sight-reading will also be requested.

Percussionists will need to demonstrate buzz rolls, flams, and paradiddles. On keyboard, they will be asked to play the F, Bb, and Eb one octave scales; sight-reading will also be requested.

Housing and Meals

Auburn University is not able to provide housing and meals as classes will be in session during the Honor Band Festival.  A block of rooms has been reserved at the Auburn University Hotel and Conference Center, and a list of other area hotels has been posted above.  There are options for meals both on campus and in downtown Auburn.  Directors or parents will be responsible for making arrangements for meals and housing.


The ensemble will rehearse in Goodwin Music Building and will perform at the Gogue Performing Arts Center.  Students will need transportation to these sites.  A tentative schedule has been posted above.

Application and Participation Fees

A $10 application fee is required.  After being selected, each participant will need to pay a non-refundable $65 participation fee by the deadline in the acceptance letter.  Each participant will receive a long-sleeved festival t shirt during check-in, and a medal after the festival has concluded.
