Derrick Smith graduated as an honors scholar from Auburn University with his Bachelor’s in Music Education and a minor in Computer Science Engineering in Fall of 2024. During his undergraduate studies, he was involved in several of Auburn’s premier music ensembles, including the Auburn University Symphonic Winds, Auburn University Marching Band, Concert Band, Pep Band, Jazz Band, and the Trumpet Ensemble—which was selected to perform at the National Trumpet Competition. Derrick has had the privilege of furthering his teaching, conducting, and performing abilities under Dr. Rick Good, Dr. Corey Spurlin, Dr. Nikki Gross, Dr. Guy Harrison, and Emery Harvison.
As a Graduate Teaching Assistant, Derrick cherishes the opportunity to work with students and colleagues to uplift the role of music in our community. In addition to his graduate coursework, he works as a teaching assistant for the Auburn University Marching Band, Symphonic Winds, Concert Band, and Campus Band. His responsibilities also include overseeing the Auburn University Band instrument inventory, preparing rehearsal spaces, maintaining records of attendance, and supporting student success.
Prior to his selection as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, Derrick enjoyed substitute teaching in the Auburn City School district. Much of his time included working in local elementary schools, specifically focused on fostering a love for music in the hearts of the youth. Derrick has taught grade levels K-12 and deliberately wields music as a tool to encourage meaningful connections between all people.
Derrick is honored to be serving as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Auburn University Bands. As an Auburn alumnus, he is thrilled to return in pursuit of a Master's Degree in Instrumental Music Education. War Eagle!
